Purport

After creating all the worlds and maintaining
them for several yugas, You swallowed them
all, at the time of great dissolution, and kept
them protected inside Your stomach. Then
You laid on the fig leaf for eons
in a state of meditative sleep (yoga nidra).
O lotus eyed, black complexioned Krishna, the bull
among yaadhavaas,perform Sengeerai dance,
taking care not to disturb Mahalakshmi,
seated on a red-lotus and residing
permanently on the Your chest.

Purport

Taking the body of a lion, the king among animals,
You tore open the body of asura Hiranya kasipu with
your sharp nails, splattering blood all over. O Lord,
You took this avatar to protect his son Prahalladha
and make his words* come true. Long time ago,
when demigod Indra got angry with inamates of Gokulam
because they offered pooja to the Govardhana Hill
instead of him, he sent in huge dark clouds and
poured heavy rains with hailstones for seven days,
displacing people and cattle and giving them great
suffering. O Lord, the bull among yaadhavaas, You
came to the rescue of the people there by lifting up
Govardhana Hill with your hand as an Umbrella and
saved people and cows from rains and destruction.
O Krishna, for my sake, dance sengeerai once

(notes: * on being asked by Hiranya kasipu
"where is your God? show me", Prahalladha points
his finger to a nearby pillar and says He exists
even in this. At that moment, the asura bangs
the pillar with his mace (gadai in tamil) and
breaks it into two . The ferocious Lord
taking Lion-Man avatar, emerged from the
pillar and killed the asura. Thus the Lord made
his devotee Prahalladha's words come true)

Purport

O Lord, You are our leader and the embodiment
of 4 Vedas. Brahmaa, born from your navel, once
lost the Vedas to asuras named Madhu and Kaitaba
and became very distressed. Emberumaan rescued
the Vedas from the asuras and restored them back
to Brahmaa, showing him the grace of a mother.
Measuring the whole worlds, going beyond even the
stars, You stood tall in Trivikramaa avatar, You
killed the rogue elephant Kuvalayapeedam and reined
in seven bulls in a contest, my sweet heart, the bull
among Yaadhavaas, protector of cows, please perform
sengeerai dance for me once!

Purport

O Lord, you made the devas residing in heavens
thrilled by killing chakataasura (the demon who
entered a wheel in the spirit form and tried to
kill Krishna) . You drank the poisonous breast
milk of demon Poothanaa, You caught hold a disguised
demon calf named vatsaasura with your hands and
swung him upwards on to the hard-wood apple tree
and at once achieved the purpose of killing the
asura and getting the fruits. O my black colored
calf, You finished menacing asuras named
Thenukaasuran, Muraasuran and Nirakaasuran
for the protection of the people of this world
and the heavens, You are like a great
elephant, a terror to your enemies, please
dance sengeerai once for my sake!

Purport

Long haired cowherd women had taken pains to
prepare curd and ghee. But You didn't take
much trouble in stealing all of them with Your
lotus hands and gulping them copiously. Though
You were tied to the mortar, You pushed it
between twin Arjun trees, killing the asuras
resident in them. O lord, the great warrior
prince, protector of cows, bull
among yaadhavaas, please dance sengeerai in
such a way that your pearl like teeth
should be visible upon your gentle smile and your
beautiful curly hair- locks should fall
and sway on your face as you dance!

Resembling the dark purple color of Kaaya flower,
looking like a dark dense cloud, O Lord, You did
an exotic dance on the head of evil serpent Kaaliyan,
who was occupying a hill in the forest. My sweet
little child, You broke the tusks of rogue elephant
Kuvalayaapeedam, You fought with expert wrestlers
and defeated them, bull among yaadhavaas,
protector of cows, please dance sengeerai for me!

Purport

The tough-natured cowherd men once challenged
You, gentle bodied, to take on 7 bulls in a contest
of fight to conquer the heart of Nappinnai.
You were more than a match for the bulls and
did an easy job of that and took the hand of Nappinnai,
who possessed beautiful hairs and a body beautiful
like that of a peacock. On another occasion,
You drove a charriot to paramapadam and retrieved
(brought back to earth alive) all the 4 dead sons of a
Brahmin and restored them back to their mother.
O, bull among yaadhavaas, protector of cows,
please do a sengeerai dance!

The One who is presiding over Tirukkurungudi,
a place in eternity, One who resides as archaa
murthi in places such as ThiruveLLarai, fortress
Thirumaalirunjcholai and Thirukkannapuram divya desams,
One who relieves my distress, O Krishna! young yaadhava
girls passionately take You from house to house and
play with You. You must, therefore, do a sengeerai
dance to please those girls. Your dance should
attract the commoners and the Poets, as well,
who come to see your dance and the
latter should sing praises about Your dance.
The possessor of seven worlds, dance sengeerai!

When You dance sengeerai, attractive, flowery,
sweet, delicious smells emanate from You. The sweet
smell of milk, curd and ghee which You consume
often and the fragrance of sandalwood paste, and
chempaka flowers which You adorn on You daily
comes out from Your body. When You open Your
little mouth and smile, the fragrance of lotus
flower and camphor encircles the place,
and as You open Your coral colored lips,
the milky teeth shines like silver buds.
O Krishna! perform the dance such that the nectar
filled saliva drops from your mouth. The controller
of seven worlds, please dance sengeerai!

Your toes are like the petals of lotus flower.
You wear exquisite toe rings, ankle bells, golden
thread on the waist with pearls and beads
interlaced, rings on the fingers, bracelet
on the wrists, necklace with panchaayuda
(five weapons) symbols, shoulder rings, ear
rings and pendant on the forehead. O! the
King of cowherd clan, dance sengeerai
gently swaying these ornaments as you dance!

Mathsya(Fish), Nrusimha(Man-Lion) and Vaamana(dwarf),
One who is the chief of cowherd clan, One who removed
Yasoda's distress and the Lord of seven worlds -
Sri Krishna was engaged in sengeerai dance by the
youthful Yasoda, whose walk resembled that of a swan.
Those who can sing these ten pAsurams composed by
periAzhwAr in sweet tamizh, shall attain glory and
great happiness in all the eight quarters of this world.
